The Unwilling by Kelly Braffet Review

I really enjoyed this novel! It brought me back to the way older fantasy works were written. Now, don’t get me wrong this story is long and it is very dark. There are a lot of messed up things happening. Things that I don’t agree with and that were disturbing. But perhaps because I read other reviews before starting the book that warned of the darkness, I was able to better prepare for it? It is also an adult fantasy novel and so will be different compared to a young adult novel.

The story centers around Judah who has been linked since she was a baby to Gavin, the heir of Highfall. The link they share is strange but is probably the only thing that has kept her alive for so long. Judah, Gavin, his brother Theron, and Gavin’s intended bride Eleanor have been raised together since childhood and regard each other as family. The story follows Judah as she tries to continue to survive and find her own little happiness at the great house. Though there are many, including the Magus Nate, that have other plans for her.

This book is definitely not for everyone. There are a lot of disturbing elements to it. But it is well written and with a plot that drew me into the story wondering what was going to happen. I actually can’t wait to read the next book!

My rating: 3.5 out 5 stars
